Does Stress Cause Weight Gain?

Q. I am in my 40's and every year I buy on extra pounds, mostly around my waist. I am under a great deal of stress with aging parents, kids, home and of course, working full time. I have heard that being under stress can cause weight gain. How does this happen?

A. Well it's true stress does cause weight gain, especially around the middle of your body. The way it works is, the body has built in stress regulator glands that produce hormones/chemicals that help your body react quickly when you find yourself in danger. These trusty little stress hormones, produced by the adrenal glands, are known as cortisol and adrenaline, whose purpose is to pump you up enough to get away from a bad or dangerous situation and/or cope with high levels of emotional, mental and physical stress.

Under high stress the body can go into a supercharged state that is ready for action, resulting in elevated heart rate, dilated pupils, blood rushing to large organs, blood pressure rising, sweating occurs. If the stress hormones continue their production, you will eventually find yourself with a run down system. Over time, the body's immune system becomes faulty, the memory and concentration goes out the window, the emotional stability is shot, your body begins accelerated aging and you will store fat around the middle of your body like no tomorrow! Yes, stress can do that and more. So with all of that said, let us talk about what to do.

Following are suggestions for how to get a handle on stress and calm your body gradually. Try at least one very day to get yourself healthier and balanced.

1. Stop saying you are stressed out. Yes, you may be, but why tell yourself? After a short time, you will have yourself convinced that you are half-crazy. Instead, tell yourself that you are "in control," "feeling good," and loving life.

2. Start every day with a healthy balanced breakfast. Include: at least 14 grams of protein for blood sugar balance and high fiber for energy. Consider eggs and high fiber hot cereal or a protein shake with flax seed.

3. Eat every 3 to 4 hours if you are "Stressed." Yes, take the time to do it, it will save you from a "blood sugar crash." (which causes more cortisol). Eating regularly also keeps you from "snapping" at everyone around you.

4. Have your stress hormone levels checked. This may be the answer to many of your emotional and physical complaints. (www.ventanawellness.com)

5. Breathe...You need to breathe. Take a deep breath in slowly, to the count of six, hold it for three counts and release it slowly to the count of six. Try this at least 10 times every day.

6. Chill pills. Try GABA, a natural supplement that helps you feel calmer, and less reactive.
Most of all take this year to find better balance in all areas of your life and make sure you are feeling good about how you spend your time and energy!
